Karoshi Version 7.0 Beta - This is the first release of our new version running on Ubuntu 64 bit.

What's New
  • First version of Karoshi remastered on Ubuntu 64 bit
  • Server names and tcpip address can now be chosen on installation
  • Install as many servers as you like. Allocate server roles after installation
  • The Karoshi web management shows a summary of the servers installed and their roles
  • All server roles are now modular and installed from the web management
  • Home areas for groups can be assigned to any Karoshi server or re-assigned to different servers later
What's left to do
  • Most features have been tested but this version has not yet been run in a production environment
  • The asset register module has not yet been converted for the new version

Karoshi Version 6.0.2 - This is a minor release, which updates the web management and operating system to the latest version of all the software.

Karoshi Version 6.0 - This version is a remaster of the latest version of PCLinuxOS (2009). The interface has changed to being entirely accessible though a Web browser. User data is now stored in an LDAP database. There were changes to the backup system and printing and bugfixes.

Karoshi Version 5.1.3 - This version is a remaster of the latest version of PCLinuxOS (2007). The Main control panels were changed to use ruby so that all features can be seen at a glance and are easier to use. Desktop independence was gained by changing from konsole to xterm and adding a distribution variable for the filemanager. The karoshi user's home path was changed to /opt/karoshi/karoshi_user. Quota support was added. This can be applied to either individual users or groups of users. Quotas are assigned on a per server basis.

Karoshi Version 5.1.2 - The major feature added is a thin client capability, which is now available using the ltsp system. This allows you to have up to 100 ltsp servers in your school. Other features include an eGroupware system and helpdesk/asset register software. Filtering within the proxy server now supports groups.

Karoshi Version 5.0.1 - An incorrect language on software installation was fixed. A shorewall bug was fixed. This only affected admins deciding not to restrict VNC to a TCP/IP number or MAC address.

Karoshi Version 5.0 - Support for Debian, Kubuntu, and SuSe was added. Bulk user creation now converts data to lower case and properly checks for duplicate usernames. Setupdns now asks for the domain name for correct operation with Moodle. Email is now performed using Squirrelmail, Postfix, IMAP, clamav, and SpamAssassin. MailScanner was added for clamav and SpamAssassin support Email now includes POP3 support if desired. SSH is now allowed from xen so that when a user is created on xen it is also created on colossus. Openbiblio and Moodle were upgraded.

Karoshi Version 4.2.3 - New features include a deployment server facility with mirroring support for clients and the Novac media studies file server setup which is designed for schools with a media studies department with a large computer allocation. This setup gives media studies students and staff a server all to themselves to save their video and sound productions. Karoshi now has the provision to include extra file servers in addition to the current line up. This is designed for schools with a very large number of computers and who want to spread the load among more servers.

Karoshi Version 4.2.2 - All server setup scripts check to see that the server has been named correctly. Correct files are copied in for the Linux client depending on whether orac and joshua are used or not. New setup for an optional file server added called Novac. This is intended to be used as a server for the Media Studies subject for the storage of multimedia work. This setup lets you set up an extra file server should you be in a very large school that needs more storage and speed. Use "Add new file server" and "Assign group to a server" on xen to enable your server.

Karoshi Version 4.1.1 - A user called karoshi that lets you use the Karoshi management tools without having to be logged in as root was added. All servers now have an icon for changing the root password . A new simsstaff group was added for sims users, which allows them to have a seperate desktop from teaching staff. addnewuser was modified to prevent many groups from being displayed. It now displays startyear+14 groups. A user can now be created with a primary group called simsstaff. Checkdiskusage now checks the startyear variable and adjusts for even or odd start years for orac and joshua.

Karoshi Version 4.0rc3 - All servers now use the new installer for configuration The create folders script for each server has been merged with Samba setup. A "software required" page has been added for each server. Backup Schedule now has a working delete backup facility.

Karoshi Version 4.0rc2 - The installer for Internet logging was fixed on hal. There is a new installer for configuring servers, a new installation using compressed files for the ISO, and manual wake on LAN checks if any jobs have been created. All usernames are now converted to lower case. There are now scripts to allow the domain name of the site to be added to online classroom so that SSL can be used on login. Hal setup files are completed. The samba installation now checks to ensure that the Linux grid is joined successfully.

Karoshi Version 3.0.1 - This release fixes a problem with Xen in which a cron job would delete the whole of the root users folder, including the complete root desktop.

Karoshi Version 3.0 - This release added a feature for creating additional backup servers, a help desk that lets users chat to online support staff and log problems using a ticket system, a library system, and a Wake on LAN scheduler for waking up client computers.

Karoshi Version 2.5.2 - In Xen, resetting a user password now creates a random password. Adding a new user is scalable. Hal now supports the latest version of dansguardian. In Sarg, internet logs are now generated from dansguardian instead of squid. Colossus has the same new features as Xen. The usermin port was put back to its default of 20000. In Moodle, online classroom logins now use Apache SSL on port 443, and the Moodle version is now 1.4.3. The latest version of usermin is now supported.

Karoshi Version 2.5.1 - Moodle authentication now runs on port 80 instead of port 443. MySQL password now changes the password correctly for moodle and Internet/intranet Web sites. The Web site theme nukeccred is now red and not pink.

Karoshi Version 2.5 - The Internet/Intranet site has now been moved to Colossus to allow availability at home. Moodle, the online classroom, has also been added.

Karoshi Version 2.3 - Webmin Configuration for xen. Creating users on xen now automatically creates a folder for the user on either Joshua or Orac if needed. Shorewall Firewall setup for all servers closing off all ports apart from the ones needed for that server. Scheduler Guest accounts can be scheduled to have their passwords changed every day and account areas cleared of files. New passwords can be viewed using the feature above. The temp area is automatically cleared every day.

Karoshi Version 2.2.1 - The Xen creation script now pushes out new users to other servers apart from Colossus and prompts to exit the scripts. All other scripts now prompt to exit Xen desktop. Icons are now placed in their own area, so that all icons work regardless of which software is installed. Home Access now works from Colossus on 192.168.0.2 instead of running an alias on 192.168.0.4. Icons in the profiles have been changed to link to the right server. The script now supports an updated version of usermin, which is needed for the new Samba password changes.

Karoshi Version 2.0 - The Colossus email server was added to the setup. This makes it possible for you to get your email from anywhere in the world while protecting your data by keeping the server in a DMZ. All known bugs were fixed.

Karoshi Version 1.1 - A school intranet site has been added to the proxy server. The intranet features homework, Web links, encyclopedia, news, and calendar surveys. The proxy server now has extra icons on the desktop for managing the intranet, including an icon to change the MySQL password, which is not set by default. The bugs discovered in the last version have been fixed.
